Question: My roommate is joining the service, what should I do?

He is 27 years old, certainly not past his prime for joining up, but not young either.

His financial debt and concerns are a big reason for doing so. He has student loans and some credit debt that isn’t cheap but not unbearable either. We both work the same job which isn’t the greatest and this is another reason he is leaving.

Overall he seems guardedly excited about the opportunity. I’m aware of all the good in terms of serving your country and the options military service provides for people coming off their duty…..but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m a little concerned about it, especially in a time of war.

What can I offer him as a roommate and friend besides support? He is getting ready to sign paperwork for all of this on Saturday. Maybe you’ve dealt with this before, or have a better understanding of how to best handle this, or are serving or have served the country before, and can offer advice. Thanks in advance.

Answer: I see a lot of people saying that finances are a terrible reason to enlist. I see it the opposite way because these people can get their finances straight while they are in. It shouldnt be the only reason they join but how is it anyone elses business. I look at it as at least they are serving their country while they correct their mistakes rather than go on welfare ar something along those lines. At least he's trying. Also I understand you are trying to be a concerned friend but how would he feel about your post about his situation and choices. You may have good intentions but it's not your decision. Aside from these factors just be his friend and dont be so judgemental behind his back. He is obviously old enough to know something needs fixed and is taking steps to do so.

The view of people in debt changed throughout the 20th Century. At first, it was unacceptable when turn of the century people began to buy homes however, that changed. Debt became more and more acceptable, leading up to the roaring 20’s when people were so immersed in their debt problems that the future became bleak. All these debt problems led to the Great Depression, which once again made debt a four letter word. Throughout the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, people would only get into debt to buy a home. Heavy student loans, car loans with double digit interest rates and credit cards wouldn’t even have been considered.

However, as the 60’s began, and especially the 70’s, credit cards became more popular and people became more comfortable with debt. All of this led to the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s where debt became a way of life, and the only way certain people were able to afford big homes, nice cars and an affluent lifestyle.
All of this bring us to the 21st century, a time when debt problems have run amok, where people are turning to bankruptcy more and more, and where people are beginning to consider debt as an evil once again. However, as most debt settlement professionals will tell you, seeing debt as an evil is a good thing. Far too many people have allowed themselves to fall deep into financial ruin because they were comfortable with tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt and other forms of unsecured debt. Debt settlement experts work with people everyday who have forty, fifty and even sixty thousand dollars in credit card debt, debt spent on clothes, food and possessions these people don’t even own anymore.

The shame of debt problems throughout the nation, is that few people got into their debt problems by purchasing things they needed. When debt settlement experts work with people who are trying to get out of mountains of debt, they hear stories about people buying boats, second homes, wardrobes, fancy meals and other frivolous items. However, people become addicted to a lifestyle and feel empty without the ability to buy what they want when they want it. Debt becomes an addiction, a way to gratify the desire to have things. This leads to heavy debt problems, and a lifestyle of trying to own everything while not having enough to buy it.
Debt problems crush people, they wind up avoiding phone calls from lenders, not opening bills when they come and so forth. All of this leads to stress, sleepless nights and some people even get heart attacks over worrying about their debt.

So, in the 21st century, hopefully people will be able to see debt for what it is…a necessary evil. Debt allows people to buy houses, own cars and sometimes even go to school, but it should be seen as a necessary evil, not a necessary good. Hopefully, this will be a truth that people will follow throughout the century, although history isn’t on our side.

Wikipedia, on the other hand, tells us that a recession is a general slowdown in economic activity over a sustained period of time, or a business cycle contraction. It is during this time that many macroeconomic indicators vary in a similar way. During recessions, there is a downfall of production as measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment, investment, spending, capacity utilization, household incomes and business profits. What businessmen and even common individuals fear is the recession effect. We are afraid that it might lead to a depression. The greatest fear then is the life during the great depression.

It is important to know what causes a recession before we will talk about recession effect. Varied factors are identified to have contributed to a recession, however, the major identified cause is inflation. What is inflation then? In economics, inflation is the general ascent or rise of the prices of goods and services over a period of time. Generally, when the prices are high, the tendency is that there is less goods and services that can be bought or acquired with the same amount of money. There are multifarious factors causing inflation. These are higher energy costs, increased production costs, and national debt. As a result, people tend to start saving. People will minimize spending and will not engage in much leisure activities. Businesses curtail their expenditures in an effort to trim costs. When business establishments do this, GDP declines. Ripple effect follows because companies lay off workers to lessen their labor costs. All these will result into what we call as recession.

What is a recession effect? Actually, it is not only one. There are many effects that recession brings. For businesses, there are fewer customers. This connotes that companies will have lower income as compared in the time where there is no recession. Since people have tight budget, they will just buy products which are second or even third class. They do so because they control the expenditures they make to be able to buy all their needs. To retain customers, companies must innovate ways and means. In the case of the customers, they are able to buy less number of goods and services with the income that they have before and during recession.

How do you work your way through recession effect? Because of the economic financial crisis, you need to have a crisis management plan. If the income that you have is not sufficient to sustain your needs, looks for other resources. The internet is a rich source of extra income. Do not wait for miracles to happen. Work in order for you to have extra income. There are internet companies looking for bloggers and video editors. If you have those skills, then bingo, you already have an edge over the others. “If there’s a will there’s is always a way.” If you want to survive the recession effect, then find other sources of income.

Most people do not spend time addressing their personal finances in sufficient detail ahead of unexpected and scheduled expenses. This causes significant financial crises for many families. This article addresses the issues of proper planning to avoid a personal finance crisis.

It is in the news nowadays all over the place about the home mortgage crisis that is crippling the housing industry in America. Elsewhere in the world, there is similar news about the real estate slowdown. Many families are unable to keep up with the increasing cost of energy as oil prices have been skyrocketing. To add to it is the expense of college education for children, car payments and other revolving credit card payments and the net result is a massive level of stress in the financial health of the family and a potential personal finance crisis.

The age old adage of prevention is better than cure is applicable one more time here. The only way in which one can avoid a personal financial crisis is by proper pre-planning. Keep it simple; one does not need to complicate matters any more than they have to be. Start off with your take home income and budget a certain amount for rent or mortgage, a certain amount for energy, food, transportation, education and miscellaneous expenses. You need to categorize each of these into further sub divisions and really pin point the budgeted expenses. There needs to be a savings plan for a rainy day and sufficient life insurance coverage expenses also in the event that the main breadwinner of the family passes away.

Once these expenses have been written down, then additional analyses need to be performed. If the income meets or exceeds the expenses, then you are in good shape. If the income falls short of the expenses, then you have simply only two choices. One choice is to cut down the expenses. The other choice is to find additional sources of income. There is no magical way in which you can finance yourself out of debt by borrowing additional money by any means. You do not want to get caught in the perpetual debt machine. Debt comes at a price and I cannot believe that there are people that borrow more and more to pay for things they cannot afford in the first place. Proper personal finance planning is absolutely essential to avoid crises in the future and one needs to be honest in drafting and executing such plans.
