Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) — President Barack Obama , in his first State of the Union address, proposed a $10,000 higher-education tax credit for families and said debt should be forgiven for those who repay college loans over 20 years.

Question: Question about FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE GRANTS?

Im a 21 year old individual who is swimming in debt. I heard about federal and state grants offered to individuals who need assistance. Although i have found the site grants.gov, I cannot seem to find information on grants offered for debt relief for individuals in my circumstances. I am looking to get out of all my debt that i cannot seem to repay. because i just want to go back to college. Any help on this would be great. Are there any free legitimate sites out there that can help you find debt relief grants ?
moon bunny, id like to ask you a question about the government loan.. is that something that can be used for education tuition and partially used for decreasing credit card debt? How should i go about this? Thanks

Answer: Financial assistance grants for students is tougher than for anyone else. If you are an individual alone, it's a little bit easier. For example, have you ever heard of the Pell Grant? It is a financial assistance grant for students that helps them when they can't help themselves or don't have parental support. Also, there are many service and work programs.

But honestly, if none of those appeal to you, the best thing you can do is get a loan. I know loans aren't appealing, and I certainly didn't want one, but I applied for student loans. The Federal government is very willing to work with you for the payment of those loans, and unlike some financial institutions, they don't track what you do with your money. So technically you could blow it, but if you're smart and serious about attending school, then you could use half the money to pay tuition, and the other half to pay down debt.

But I feel I must warn you, if you're looking to go the credit card route, don't! My husband got a credit card in college, and put his tuition on it, and anything else he felt like. To this day, we are still struggling with his credit card debts from college, while my student loan debt is completely managed and taken care of.

Is It Possible to Apply for Free Government Grants, Loans, & Scholarships

Question: Federal Debt Relief Grant?

Ahh… someone please tell me it’s a real thing. Is it? I’ve done my research on the internet about it and have come up with some interesting information such as writing a grant proposal but nowhere ever says where to send it to or if there are any papers that need to be filled out.

Does anyone know anything about this? If so I would greatly appreciate any kind of information or steps on how to do this. Thanks so much!

Answer: There's no such thing as federal debt relief grants for individuals

The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt and no grants for simply fattening your wallet.

Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.

For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.

There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

We should all take advantage of the opportunities government grant money can offer.  It is basically free money.  Since some of our tax dollars go into them, why not get some of them back?  Grants should be looked at as a way to gain some financial strength and make some dreams come true.  Everyone has one reason or another why they can use some extra money so, why not try to get some.
