I’m now in debt to my Landlord because the gov said I was unfit to work and gave me an icrease in benefits, so now have to find an extra £10 a week plus what they haven’t payed since the begining of the tax year. It stays on and affects your credit record for 7 years
It stays on your life record forever. In a case that you where to apply for a Federal job (and some others) they will ask if you EVER declared bankruptcy. If you lie you lose. If the reason was out of your control, say example medical expenses for a family member, then it would not be held against you. If it is to bail on debt, it will be held against you in a job interview.

Best bet is to try to work out a payment plan. If you went to college the debt would most likey be 3 times higher the you have. Of course the payment rate would be different.

Avoid declaring Bankruptcy unless there is no other choice.

There’s no magic number regarding how low a credit card company will go to get a settlement. They simply want as much money as possible, so if they think they can get $1600 by offering you a settlement that’s better than having a $2700 debt on the books that you never pay.

I would start by offering them about $1200 for the debt, and see where that gets you. Never accept a first offer. But if they don’t budge, $1600 is a good deal since it allows you to pay this debt off in 4 months.

The key to dealing will collections people is to get everything in writing. Don’t send them a dime until you have your agreement in writing in your hand. Never send payment based on a verbal promise of a settlement and never send it based on a promise that the paperwork is in the mail. Keep good records and make sure their paperwork clearly states the payment structure, and the fact that those payments settle the debt in full.

Question: When Is Debt Consolidation A Good Idea?

I have about 10,000 in debt not counting student loans, and even making the payments to the collector’s have me struggling to maintain any type of comfortable lifestyle. I’m 23 and still can’t finish school because I won’t get pre-approved for a loan to get my BA. I can’t even afford to go to junior college since I already have over 60 credits and don’t even have the money for that. I’m pretty sure if I could consolidate my debt, I could afford it and save up to finish college, and actually have some type of emergency money. My debts are over 1.5 years old. Problem is, I keep hearing consolidation is a bad plan and it’s not good for you.

Please help.
All if not most of my accounts are already charged off. I’m at around 10,000-$15,000 in debt. By consildate, I mean by going through a debt consildation company. I’m passed the negotiation stage with the creditors as I never knew that was an option before it was too late.

Answer: Per your update that your accounts are already defaulted/charged-off:

Paying back defaulted, charged-off credit card accounts is a tricky matter and it might not be in your best interest to pay it back, as doing so may stir up more trouble than it’s worth. Here’s why:

- When a credit card is charged-off as bad debt, you need to understand that the damage to your credit is already done and there is no undoing it. Don’t make the mistake of simply cutting a check to whatever collection agency has the debt for the charge-off and assume that your credit rating will be magically restored...Doing so will not remove it from your credit reports. It will simply be updated to a "Paid Charge-Off," which, while slightly better, is still a seriously derogatory item. Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a charge-off, whether paid or not, can remain on a consumer's credit reports for up to seven years. This does not mean that you will have bad credit for the entire 7 years though.

- Renewing contact with debt collectors out of the blue can stir up all sorts of problems. It’s my position that a tiny increase in your credit score is not worth the risk of triggering aggressive collection activity against yourself. Your effort could be met with threatening, abusive collection calls...threats of lawsuits...and once they find out that you are willing to pay they will probably add on all sorts of fees and they’ll come after you for two or even three times the original amount of debt. Even worse, they might decide to take you to court to try to get a judgement against you for the debt...leading to possible wage garnishment of 25% of your wages.

- There are two reasons that you may want to consider paying back a charged-off account:
1) You are applying for a new mortgage, loan or apartment and the creditor is insisting that all defaulted items be paid off
2) There is a confirmed lawsuit pending on the debt

If neither of these apply, then it’s often best to take a "Don't Ask/Don't Tell" approach...just sit tight and let the charge-off fall off your credit report naturally in 7 years.

If you're going to pay off old-charged-off debt anyway, then you might as well negotiate the lowest, rock bottom settlement you can possibly get, being that the negative charge-off notation is going to stay for 7 years on your credit report, regardless of whether the charge-off is paid or unpaid. ...Offer 25%. Mail them a vaguely worded statement like:

I am willing to settle this matter for 25% of the original amount. This is in no way an admission of this debt, but rather an attempt to settle this matter. Your firm must send me a written agreement on your company's letterhead that you will accept this amount as "payment in full" and that is issue will be settled. Upon receipt of this agreement, I will mail you a money order for this amount.

- Settled/Forgiven debt is treated like earned income with the IRS...any debt that is forgiven must be added to your next year's income and you'll have to pay whatever additional taxes

I'm actually in the middle of bankruptcy right now and have had to do classes online about how to dig yourself out, I don't regret doing bankruptcy, it will give me a fresh start, not a perfect way to go, but my only option right now. I don't know about laws in other countries though. Don't give up! Look up Dave Ramsey on the net...he has great advice!

Industry – Is the industry growing or shrinking in the current economy?

Looking at quantitative factors is a bit easier, as each factor should have a specific number or yes/no answer. The most important aspects in beginners stock trading are as follows:

Financial Statements – Are they audited by an independent auditor?

Balance Sheet – What are the company’s assets and liabilities valued at?

Income Statement – What are the company’s revenues, expenses, bottom line, and profits (if any)?

Loans – How much does the company owe? How soon will they be debt free?

Cash Flow – What is the company’s cash flow value?

Answer: Boy this smells like dead fish to me. By the way, according to IRS rules any debt such as Credit Cards that is canceled or forgiven becomes taxable income to you and you have to claim it on your income tax returns (federal and state). I would stay clear of this crap. Someone is making money some where in all of this.

Just wondering if anybody else out there has a debt letter from a company called WESCOT CREDIT SERVICES LTD for the amount of 10 pounds for failure to pay for a PAY PER VIEW football game on SETANTA.
I recieved one this morning…………………this is the first thing i have heard about me oweing Setanta money for a game that i watched and supposedly hadn’t paid for ( even though you can’t watch a game without giving your credit card details).
I phoned Setanta and they said that they have been told to tell people to call an 0905 number so i did and it’s a premium rate helpline that goes dead………called Setanta back and they said thats all the info they can give me.
Anybody out there had the same problem ????

Answer: Dont ring the number again... write to the debt collection agency, cc in a watchdog/abitrator.. save copies of your corespondence

Question: Is this a good way to pay off credit cards?

I was going to get a consolidation loan from my local credit union.

Answer: Do you go to school Sat. and Sunday? Even a full day job on Sunday would help you make the pay.ments temporarily and it, as stated, will not kill you for 6 months. Full time, does that mean every evening?

If your local CU will give you that loan then take it but don't be stupid by deciding once that check is in your hand to spend it on ANYTHING, even 1 dollar, other than the debt.
