Home Debt Forgiveness

Question: Mortgage debt forgiveness act?
My parents own a home and they owe about $20K in back mortgage payments. How does the mortgage debt forgiveness act will apply to them. They don’t want to loose their house.
Answer: Although some low level politicians have mentioned the possibility of mortgage debt forgiveness, I don’t believe anybody is seriously pushing the idea due to resistance from all the lenders. In other words, as far as I know, there is no such thing as a mortgage debt forgiveness act. There is a provision that says if you are foreclosed against or are granted a short sale, any debt you do not repay will not be considered income to you and taxes will not be levied on the debt forgiven. This occurs only after a foreclosure or short sale not before as I assume you were thinking about.

American Express Forgive Debt
Question: American Christians do you carry an American Express or Capital One card?
Jesus told a parable of a servant that owed his master money. Times were hard and he pleaded with his master to forgive his loan. The master gracefully forgave his servant of the loan. The servant also had servants of his own who owed him money. These people came to the servant and pleaded that he have grace and forgive them of their loans because of the hard times. The servant refused to have grace and sent his servants to prison.
American Express and Capital One have both received large sums of money from the U.S. Government as part of the bail out plan yet it’s business as usual for these companies and they are harassing millions of people to pay back their debts.
Luckily I’m not one of these people that owe them money but as a Christian do you think it would be wrong for people to refuse to pay their bills to these companies based on the parable?
Answer: I have neither. But I see your point.
American express and Capitol One are getting governmental assistance in major dollar amounts, while the small taxpayers still have to make it the best way they can, even if they are experiencing financial difficulty, because the larger companies are not interested in their problems, nor in making things a bit easier for those who are in debt to them.
And the government doesn’t have a bailout plan for the people of the country.
As far as whether or not people should refuse to pay…I don’t know.
I think perhaps they should, and let God deal with the companies.
Interesting question.
Hope I helped.
God bless you.

Citibank Debt Forgiveness
Question: If I consolidate my student loan with a bank, am I still eligible for loan forgiveness programs via volunteer?
I believe my student loan prior to consolidation was either Stafford or Perkins. Both S + P have programs where you teach schools or volunteer with organizations so that they can forgive a certain portion of your student loan debt.
Does the fact that I have consolidated with Citibank void me from these programs? Do banks, such as Citi, have programs like these? Also, would Citi know what kind of loan I have (Stafford vs. Perkins) or is this a totally new loan only with Citi, since I consolidated? Thanks much.
Answer: You are correct, once you consolidate, you are no longer able to have your loans forgiven under the terms of the old loans because they (your Perkins and Stafford loans) do not exist anymore. When you consolidated, they were paid off by Citi. To find out if your new loan has any type of forgiveness program (doubtful), you should contact them.
